San Marcos Community District

The San Marcos Community Planning District (SMPD) lies within The San Marcos Association (SMA) area of advocacy and has a similar name. But, it is distinctly different. The SMPD is an area defined by Santa Fe County, under the Sustainable Land Development Code (SLDC), which has the right to create its own unique District Plan. The San Marcos Community District Plan was adopted in Fall 2019 to ensure responsible development and to support continued community evolution with sensitivity to local character, cultural attributes and specific local infrastructure needs. The next step after adopting that plan was to revise the SMPD Use Matrix, or “Overlay.” That process began in 2019 but paused in early 2020 due to COVID-19. Santa Fe County has since restarted it, with the first meeting taking place on March 22, 2023.

Revising the Overlay is important to everyone in the SMPD and SMA has created this page to provide an archive of relevant documents and discussion for the public so that as many people who wish to be involved may be informed – even if they cannot attend a particular meeting.

On March 12th, 2024, the Board of County Commissioners officially adopted Ordinance 2024-05, which amended SLDC Section 9.14 (San Marcos Community District Overlay). The amendments will go into effect on April 12, 2024 (30 days after recordation by the County Clerk). You can view the adopted ordinance here:

At the December 12th Board of County Commissioners Meeting, the Board authorized our community planners to Publish Title and General Summary of an Ordinance to amend the San Marcos Community District Overlay. Please refer to the Public Hearings schedule below and visit the county webpage to view the proposed amendment language.
